It just so happens July is Sandwich Generation Month. Wondering what a sandwich generation is? It is a family made of more than a parent and child. There are many forms of sandwiched relationships:
- “Am I sandwiched?” will assist you in identifying your situation
- “A Traditional Sandwich” identifies the classic situation and provides ideas for sharing music in this mix.
- “Musical Ingredients for a Club Sandwich” provides ideas for this special, layered mix.
- “Musical Ingredients for an Open Faced Sandwich” provides resources for this common sandwich.
According to an article on Caregiver.com:
“…American families provide 80 to 90 percent of all in-home long-term care services for their aging family members, disabled adult children and other loved ones. “
While there are not exact numbers of those in a sandwiched situation, a trend is noticed of 40-year-old woman caring at home or at a distance for aging parents while working and caring for her own family.
This makes preparing your family for a sandwich situation important!
It seems many don’t readily identify themselves as a sandwiched caregiver even though they fit the definition. Maybe that’s because it isn’t an everyday item of discussion; or it is just expected in your “family”, or whatever.
I found a fun song by Bob King about sandwiches. In case you haven’t heard it, here is a recording by Fred Penner.
Let’s take this fun song and use it as a way to express our own sandwiched situation along with the emotions and events around it.[gview file=”http://www.music2spark.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/My-Sandwiched-Family.pdf” save=”1″]
