Hang around children, dreamers, creatives and you get asked lots of questions and posed many scenarios.
- What if you…
- I wonder why…
- What do you get when you cross…
Today’s post came out of the last – what do you get when you cross…”.
Many jokes start with this line. Ideas can also be generated with this idea of cross pollination.
One of the reasons I enjoy working with children is their creative nature. They create something new by combining things in a different way. They use things in a way they were not originally intended.
When preparing for a recent preschool library session, I decided to use this question. Specifically I asked: What do you get when you cross a balloon and a shaker? Here’s the answer. I only wish I could have captured the uses the children created in using it.

Love the creativity, JoAnn! For some odd reason, I was reminded of a time when my kid was being punished for something or other–anyway, his toys where moved to the garage so he had to make do with stuff around the house. We ended up building things from old cereal boxes, milk cartoons and the like…Needless to say, he still asks when we can do that again.
We’ll definitely give the balloon ball a go-round! Thank you for the suggestion 🙂
It is fun to build with things you find around the house. We are never too old to be creative. Just sometimes we forget to exercise that ability.
Hi JoAnn – Love the video! Your programs look like lots of fun and its great you are merging the two generations…they need each other! Warmly, Kathys
Intergenerational groups are a lot of fun! The videos are fun to create so others can join in the fun.
Making do with “found” toys can turn into so much fun. My kids were so proud of the “house” they build out of sticks and leaves. They even “cooked” out there, and brought me a leaf plate full of assorted flowers. It was a wonderful afternoon, and so fun to watch them exercise their imaginations.
What wonderful, creative children! “Found” is a wonderful way to describe this process.
