Space exploration was very much a part of the time I lived in. Watching television coverage of launches, the splash down, and the first steps on the moon are marked on my memory. The draw of space showed in a variety of shows – “Lost in Space”, “Star Trek”, and “Space Ghost” to name a few. There was even an elementary reading program on TV called “Reading Rocket”.
While the shuttle program has ended, I find young children are still fascinated by space. If you are a parent or an educator, NASA has some great resources including phases of the moon with Oreo cookies. 2 Teaching Mommies has an toddler and elementary packet available for download. The manipulatives of this Solar System packet on 1+1+1=1 are great.
But, it goes without saying I love music to explore space. Naturally Elementary has some fun partner songs to use as does Everything Preschool. Here are some more songs to consider: In Our Solar System (mentions that Pluto is not a planet) and “I’d Like to Visit the Moon”.
