This month during senior living community sessions, Music Sparks is focusing on music of the 1920’s and “Putting on the Ritz”. Given the rich selection of songs that came out of this period, the focus is on love.

Reflecting on  “Putting on the Ritz” allows for many conversation starters:

  1. Have you ever stated at a Ritz Hotel?
  2. What does it mean to “put on the Ritz”? (Answer: Being well dressed, elegant, having enough money, etc.)
  3. When do you like to dress up/be elegant?
  4. How does it feel to “put on the Ritz”?

As part of each session we are singing “It Ain’t Gonna Rain No More” with everyone sharing things they ain’t gonna do no more. It is amazing how many are glad to give up housework and yard work in this exercise

Other songs we are enjoying include:

  • Side by Side
  • Ain’t We Got Fun
  • Making Whoopee
  • My Blue Heaven
  • Blue Skies
  • It Had to Be You
  • Yes, We Have No Bananas
  • Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby
  • Toot, Toot, Tootsie
  • Baby Face
  • April Showers
  • Always
  • Tip Toe Through the Tulips
  • Singing in the Rain
  • Four Leaf Clover
  • Five Foot Two

For a cognitive challenge the group is signing happy, days, here and again while singing “Happy Days are Here Again”. The groups are also accompanying themselves on Boomwhackers® while singing “I Love the Mountains” – a challenge they doubted they could do but are smiling while they do it.

The discussion of performers and dates tied to these songs is amazing. While a few were young children during the 1920’s, most know the songs and have stories to share about them.

Have you ever explored the 1920’s through songs? Share your experiences in the comments below.
