As I have shared before, I provide services at two area Brookdale Senior Living facilities and challenge myself to include the monthly theme in one session. The theme for September is India. It is making me stretch as there aren’t too many well known songer senior citizen recognize that mention India. The one I came up with was “Song of India” performed by Tommy Dorsey which I can use as a warm-up with movements in the session. No, it doesn’t sound like Indian music but it will be familiar for this group of older adults.
Finding indiginous music seemed a challenge, so I threw the question out on Twitter.
[blackbirdpie id=”97306960034144258″] Drumming is usually on my list so I will be building on this with the tweets I received from Erin Bullard recommending Kirtan music and then [blackbirdpie id=”97465130610196480″] This has been a great help. I found a Krisha selection on a podcast.
While Rudyard Kipling was not from India, many know the tale of “Rikki-tikki-tavi”. I am going to use the mongoose’s rhythm to tell a shortened version of the tale.
I also like doing a sing-along so I am going to sing songs that relate to items you would find in India.
