Not another Christmas songNot another Christmas song! I’ve been hearing them since November 1st.”

Children may need a distraction so you get a break from “all I want for Christmas is …”. (It can drive you crazy.)

Elders may need a break from memories of holidays past and who they are missing.

And, there are those who do not observe Christmas.

Whether it is you, the elder(s)/child(ren) for whom you care  – it really doesn’t matter. Too much of something even if it is good, even if it is something we love can take the joy away.

We need a break from the all the “Christmasy” music. Especially in senior living communities, HAVE QUIET TIMES! This means times when the music is OFF! Also, from November 30 through December 25, include times when the music is something other than Christmas carols.

Consider these alternatives to Christmas 24/7

  • December is Bingo Birthday Month. Play a variety of bingo games. Here are resources for preschoolers and for elders. (Bingo can be a fun intergenerational activity.)
  • Gingerbread House Day is December 12th. Make Gingerbread houses and taste some gingerbread. This is a fun intergenerational activity. Sing songs about homes.
      • Home Sweet Home
      • Come On-a My House
      • My Old Kentucky Home
      • I’ll Be Home for Christmas
      • Homeward Bound
      • Over the River and Through the Woods
      • Take Me Home Country Roads

For children I found this partner song on several websites:

Some People Live In (Tune: The Old Grey Mare)
Some people live in, apartments
Live in apartments, live in apartments
Some people live in, apartments
That’s where some people live.

Some people live in, mobile homes
Live in mobile homes, live in mobile homes
Some people live in, mobile homes
That’s where some people live.

Some people live in; big houses
Live in big houses, live in big houses
Some people live in, big houses
That’s where some people live.

Some people live in, little houses
Live in little houses, live in little houses
Some people live in, little houses
That’s where some people live.

Homes
Here is a house for a robin (hold hands open)
Here is a hive for a bee (close hands together)
Here is a hole for a bunny (make a circle with hands)
Here is a home for me (point around)
