May 23rd is Turtle Day. It seems the perfect time to share turtle songs and turtle themed resources.

If I and my brother are any indications, turtles are an interest to children. When my brother was little, he used to insist we stop the car and move box turtles off the road or to take them home.

Both of us used to sing this turtle rhyme we learned from our mom.

Instead of clapping you can easily use castanets to create the snapping motion.

Other songs for children

  • Little Fingers That Play has a nice Turtle Song.
  • Little Story Bug has a song for teaching in and out – “This is My Turtle“.
  • Margie LaBella shares a fun partner song about a turtle.
  • “Turtle Rap” by Stephanie Burton is available from Songs for Teaching. This one teaches a couple of facts about turtles.

Another idea is telling the “The Tortoise and the Hare” fable having different instruments portray the animals. It is also a nice story for contrasting fast and slow.

For Senior Living Communities

There seems to be a gap in songs about turtles for adults. For those working with boomers, consider singing some of the hits by The Turtles. My recommendations are “Happy Together“, “It Was a Very Good Year“, “She’d Rather Be with Me“.

What turtle songs would you add to these lists?
